You will get this week's quoted rate, what the lane has averaged over the past year, and where this week sits against that average — which is the comparison that matters. A lane paying $2.40 a mile is a good week or a bad one only relative to itself.

Short runs pay more per mile — here is the curve

Every lane USDA quoted this week, plotted against how far it runs. The site says in words on nearly every page that rate per mile climbs as a haul shortens; this is the claim itself. The line is the trend through all of them, so a lane sitting above it is paying better than its length alone would suggest.

Destinations, four ways at once

Distance across, rate per mile up, the number of lanes behind each average as the size of the bubble — an average over three quotes deserves less weight than one over thirty — and USDA's truck supply reading as the colour, which is the thing that explains a rate rather than merely reporting it.

Best-paying destinations this week

Average rate per mile into each market, across the lanes USDA quoted. Hauls under 250 miles are excluded and only destinations with at least three lanes are shown — rate per mile climbs steeply on short runs, so mixing a 100-mile local move in would flatter it every week.
