Diesel climbs in every region, but the pump gap is now $1.69 a gallon

Energy drove the week: fuel rose everywhere while crude neared triple digits, yet the regional spread and rising reefer rates both leave room to work.

Energy set the tone this week. Diesel rose in every EIA region and crude pushed toward triple digits, but the pump map spread out and refrigerated rates kept climbing — two openings worth routing around.

**The regional spread is the story.** Diesel climbed everywhere, unevenly: the national average hit $5.652 a gallon, up 3.6% on the week and 52.4% on the year. But the Lower Atlantic sat at $5.350 while California ran $7.040 — a $1.69 gap, roughly $250 on a 150-gallon fill. Buy east, and don't top off in California if you can help it. The Gulf Coast, still one of the cheapest hubs at $5.481, rose fastest of all: up 4.7% on the week and 64.7% on the year. **Crude is the reason.** Oil reached $97 as fighting in Iran intensified, Transport Topics reports — the upstream driver behind this week's pump moves. [Oil prices hit $97 as Iran fighting intensifies](https://www.ttnews.com/articles/oil-prices-iran-intensifies)

**Reefer is the bright spot, and it's a real one.** Our USDA figure puts the national refrigerated produce rate at $4.21 a mile, up 1.8% on the week and 14.7% on the year — while the dry van PPI slipped 1.3% for July. Produce lanes off the Delmarva peninsula led the board, with Delmarva to Baltimore paying $14 a mile. If you have the reefer trailer, this is the month to use it. **Equipment costs have a deadline.** FreightWaves reports Class 8 demand staying hot ahead of a costly 2027 emissions transition — if a truck purchase is on your horizon, the math shifts next year. **California moves on truck pricing.** State legislators approved a measure requiring heavy-duty zero-emission truck pricing to be disclosed, per Trucking Dive — a small transparency step for carriers weighing the ZE mandate. Figure 1

On-highway diesel price, National average

Dollars per gallon Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration National average. A retail pump average including taxes, surveyed every Monday. Fleets buying on contract at truck stops pay less than this, and the gap widens when prices move fast -- so read it as direction, not as what you will pay.

Refrigerated produce truck rate, national average

Dollars per mile Source: USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Reefer rate per mile. Refrigerated produce only, and an unweighted mean across whichever lanes were active that week -- so the mix shifts with the growing season. Treat week-to-week moves in the lane table as more meaningful than in this average.
