Data brief

The national average fell 20.5 cents in the week to 20 April 2026.

The average retail price of on-highway diesel fell 20.5 cents to $5.403 a gallon in the week to 20 April 2026, according to the Energy Information Administration's weekly survey.

The spread across regions was 2.256 dollars a gallon: California was dearest at $7.325, Gulf Coast (PADD 3) cheapest at $5.069.

Against the same week a year earlier the national average is up 46.9%.

The EIA figure is a retail pump average including taxes. Fleets buying on contract typically pay less, and the gap widens when prices move quickly, so the survey is best read as direction rather than as the number on your own invoice.
