Diesel rose again — but the $1.58 regional gap is the number to route around

Fuel climbed across the board this week, yet where you fill matters more than the headline average — alongside border-security pressure and a federal fix on I-70.

A quiet week on regulation, a louder one on fuel and the border. No new rulemaking landed that changes a carrier's day, but the pump map moved, cross-border security stayed in the headlines, and there was some genuinely good news on infrastructure. Here's what a small carrier can actually do with it.

**The spread is worth more than the average.** Diesel rose again, with EIA's Monday survey putting the national average at $5.454 a gallon, up 3.7% on the week and 46.9% on the year. That climb is real and it isn't easing. But the map is where the money is: the Lower Atlantic is the cheapest region in the country at $5.204, while California sits at $6.785 — a $1.58 gap, or about $237 on a 150-gallon fill. West Coast excluding California runs $5.699 and the Gulf Coast $5.237. These are retail pump averages, so read them as direction rather than the contract price you'll actually pay; but the direction is clear enough — if your lane gives you the choice, fill east and skip the coast. **Cargo theft is falling, but the schemes are getting smarter.** FreightWaves reports Mexican authorities are recording fewer highway cargo thefts even as criminal groups shift to more targeted methods against cross-border freight. Worth a look if you run loads through Mexico or hand them to subcontractors. **A key east-west corridor is getting federal money.** The Trucker covers a new case study on how sustained federal investment is modernizing Interstate 70 across Colorado, Missouri and beyond — one of the most heavily used freight routes in the country. If you run I-70, the work now is the smoother run later. **Your toll bill is data, not just a cost.** FreightWaves argues the dollar figure on a toll charge is the least useful part of it; the time, location and lane each transaction records can tell a fleet more about how it actually runs than the amount ever will. For an owner-operator watching costs, the monthly statement is a free operations log most people throw away. On-highway diesel price, National average

Dollars per gallon Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration National average. A retail pump average including taxes, surveyed every Monday. Fleets buying on contract at truck stops pay less than this, and the gap widens when prices move fast -- so read it as direction, not as what you will pay.
