Diesel rose in every region — the fill-up gap is now $1.58 a gallon
Fuel climbed across the board, reefer held while dry van slipped again, and the energy backdrop stayed unsettled.
Fuel went up in every region this week, and the only levers you control are where you buy it and what's on the trailer. Here's what moved.
**The spread is the play.** EIA's Monday survey put the national diesel average at $5.454 a gallon, up 3.7% on the week and 46.9% on the year. The regions didn't move together: the Lower Atlantic sits at $5.204 while California is at $6.785 — $1.58 a gallon apart, or about $237 on a 150-gallon fill. The Gulf Coast, at $5.237, is up 56.8% on the year, the steepest annual climb of any region we track. If your lane gives you a choice of where to tank, this is the week to plan it. **Reefer held while dry van slipped.** Refrigerated freight paid $4.14 a mile nationally, up 9.1% on the year even after easing 1% on the week. Dry van truckload rates fell again — the index is down 1.3% on the month, though still 8.1% above a year ago. If you've got the reefer trailer, this is the month to use it. **The energy backdrop stayed unsettled.** Two reasons to keep watching the pump: Transport Topics reports the Iran conflict is nearing its six-month mark with fresh US threats of economic pressure aimed at the Strait of Hormuz, and separately that Saudi producers are shuttling crude north on chartered tankers to keep supply moving around Houthi threats. Both sit upstream of what you pay to fill up. **Canada freight still in limbo.** If you run cross-border, The Trucker relays Quebec's premier saying Canada-US trade talks are "far from over" and pressing Ottawa for detail before anything gets signed. Nothing to act on yet, but the uncertainty on northbound lanes isn't clearing.
